You received an RFI, a PPI letter or a decline

Letters from INZ come with deadlines, usually short ones, and the quality of the response often decides the outcome. Jason has written many RFI and PPI responses. Get in touch early.

  • Applicants who received a Potentially Prejudicial Information (PPI) letter

Key requirements

  • An RFI asks for more information or documents
  • A PPI letter sets out information that may count against you and gives you a chance to respond
  • Options after a decline depend on the visa type and where you are. Some allow reconsideration or appeal, others need a fresh application
  • Every one of these steps has a strict deadline

How it works

  1. Assess the letter

    Identify what INZ is really concerned about, and the deadline.

  2. Plan the response

    Decide which evidence and explanations to give, and request more time if needed.

  3. Write the response

    Answer each concern directly, with supporting evidence.

  4. Follow through

    If the outcome is still negative, assess reconsideration, appeal or reapplying.

Practical notes from Jason

  • A PPI letter is not a decline. It is your last chance to explain, so treat it seriously
  • Answer the specific concerns raised. Piling on unrelated documents does not help
  • If someone else lodged the original application, bring every letter and document lodged

Can I appeal a decline?

It depends on the visa type and whether you are in New Zealand. Deadlines are short, so contact us promptly.
