The Active Investor Plus visa
Investor residence has a high threshold and a small number of applicants each year, and it is assessed very closely. What matters is the size of the investment, where the funds came from, and how they are invested. Jason first checks whether it suits you, then traces your funds step by step.
Who this is for
- Families with significant investable assets considering New Zealand residence
- Business owners, investors and high-net-worth individuals
- Applicants wanting residence for a partner and children too
- People comparing investor residence with other pathways
Key requirements
- A compliant investment in New Zealand of the required amount and term, currently in investment categories such as Growth and Balanced
- Funds must be lawfully earned, owned by the applicant and fully traceable
- Time-in-New-Zealand requirements apply during the investment period
- Health and character requirements apply. INZ's current published policy sets the thresholds
This is a general summary. See the INZ website ↗ for current requirements.
How it works
Initial assessment
Your assets, where the funds are held and your family situation.
Trace the funds
A timeline of every source, and the gaps in evidence.
Investment plan and application
Work with your investment adviser on a compliant plan, then prepare and lodge.
Assessment and RFIs
INZ's Business Migration Branch assesses the application and we answer its queries.
After approval
Reminders of the time-in-New-Zealand and investment requirements.
Practical notes from Jason
- Source of funds is the core of the assessment. Business income, dividends, property sales, inheritance and gifts each need different evidence
- Cross-border transfers must line up in route and timing, with bank records at every step
- Start early. Notarising and translating overseas documents usually takes longer than expected

How does this relate to the Parent Retirement visa?
Both are assessed by INZ's Business Migration Branch and both turn on investment funds and their source, but they suit different people and have different amounts and conditions. See the parent visas page for Parent Retirement.
Is English required?
This follows INZ's current requirements, which change from time to time. We confirm the position at the assessment.
